Sky AN and Country CI, embodying the male and female principles. This first couple joined - to the point that it merged - in the "sacred marriage" (hieros gamos). From their connection, ENLIL, the god of the air, was born to divide his parents. God An lifted the heavens up and Enlil kidnapped his mother Earth. However, An and Ki still wanted each other, and therefore An began crying in the form of the rain falling on Earth. These tears turned into pairs over time, rising to the sky. That made An and Ki meet again.
