Story of the illustration: The sky AN and the earth KI, embodying the masculine and feminine principles. This first pair united—so completely that they merged—in a “sacred marriage” (hieros gamos). From their union, ENLIL was born, the god of air, who separated his parents. The god An lifted the heavens upward, and Enlil carried away his mother, the Earth. Yet An and Ki continued to long for each other, and so An began to weep in the form of rain falling upon the earth. These tears later turned into vapor and rose back to the sky. Thus, An and Ki were reunited once again.
